Situation
Barclaycard Germany was developing a new digital lending capability to support unsecured personal loan products within the German market.
To support the launch and scaling of this capability, the organisation required a modern credit risk decision platform capable of evaluating loan applications in real time while supporting sophisticated risk modelling, fraud detection, and pricing strategies.
The platform needed to integrate multiple technical components including credit risk decision engines, pricing algorithms, fraud detection tools, and customer application processing systems. In addition, the system required integration between the German banking environment and Barclaycard’s broader technology infrastructure in the United Kingdom.
Given the financial and regulatory importance of lending decisions, the platform had to provide reliable risk assessment, operational transparency, and secure infrastructure capable of supporting high transaction volumes.
The programme required strong technical leadership to coordinate international engineering teams, design the system architecture, and ensure delivery of a secure and scalable digital lending platform.
Action
As Senior Technical Delivery Manager, I led the technical delivery of the credit risk decision platform supporting Barclaycard Germany’s unsecured personal loans offering.
Working from the Hamburg office, I coordinated international engineering teams responsible for platform architecture, application development, risk analytics, and infrastructure integration.
Key responsibilities included:
Leading delivery of the credit risk decision engine used to evaluate unsecured loan applications
Managing the development of risk-based pricing capabilities to support dynamic lending decisions
Implementing fraud detection and prevention mechanisms integrated into the lending workflow
Coordinating delivery of optical character recognition (OCR) capabilities used for document verification and processing
Managing the development of risk strategy scorecards used to assess borrower creditworthiness
In addition to platform development, I led the design and implementation of the underlying infrastructure required to support the system.
This included:
Leading the cloud infrastructure implementation (IaaS) supporting the lending platform
Establishing secure connectivity between seven German corporate environments and Barclaycard UK systems
Implementing authentication gateways and API connectivity supporting cross-border system integration
Managing DevOps teams responsible for development, operations, and production support
The programme also involved managing offshore and international delivery teams, ensuring coordination across development, architecture, and operational stakeholders.
To strengthen platform monitoring and operational insight, the programme introduced:
ELK (ElasticSearch, Logstash, Kibana) as the strategic transaction logging platform
AppDynamics as the operational monitoring dashboard for system performance and reliability
Outcome
The programme successfully delivered the technical platform supporting Barclaycard Germany’s unsecured lending capability.
The credit risk decision engine enabled real-time evaluation of loan applications while incorporating fraud detection, risk modelling, and pricing capabilities within a unified decision framework.
The system architecture enabled secure integration between German banking operations and Barclaycard’s broader international technology infrastructure.
Operational monitoring and transaction logging capabilities also improved visibility into system performance and lending decision workflows.
