SSE - Enterprise Analytics Platform Transformation

Industry: Energy & Utilities

Situation

SSE was expanding its enterprise analytics capability in order to improve operational insight, enable real-time reporting, and strengthen data-driven decision-making across the organisation.

As a major energy provider, SSE operates a complex technology landscape spanning operational infrastructure, energy trading, customer systems, and regulatory reporting environments. Data required for analytics and reporting existed across multiple operational systems, creating challenges in generating consistent enterprise insight and supporting advanced analytics capabilities.

To address these challenges, SSE initiated the development of a modern Azure-based enterprise data platform capable of integrating data across systems and supporting large-scale analytics and reporting workloads.

Given the complexity of the environment and the number of teams involved, the programme required strong leadership to coordinate delivery teams, establish governance structures, and ensure alignment between architecture, engineering, and analytics capabilities.

Action

As Senior Project Manager, I led delivery of the enterprise Azure Data Platform supporting SSE’s analytics and reporting capabilities.

Working across architecture teams, data engineers, and programme leadership, I coordinated delivery across multiple teams and vendors responsible for building the organisation’s enterprise analytics infrastructure.

Key responsibilities included:

  • Leading delivery of the Azure-based enterprise data platform supporting advanced analytics and reporting

  • Coordinating global delivery teams responsible for platform engineering and data integration

  • Establishing programme governance frameworks to ensure structured delivery and executive oversight

  • Aligning architecture, engineering, and analytics workstreams across the platform programme

  • Managing delivery risks, stakeholder engagement, and programme coordination across multiple teams

  • Supporting vendor coordination and delivery alignment across the platform ecosystem

The programme required careful coordination across engineering teams, architecture leadership, and vendor partners to ensure the platform could support the organisation’s evolving analytics requirements.

Outcome

The programme delivered a scalable enterprise Azure data platform capable of supporting advanced analytics and real-time reporting across the organisation.

By integrating data across operational systems and enabling enterprise analytics capabilities, the platform strengthened SSE’s ability to generate insight across key operational and commercial functions.

The programme also established structured governance frameworks that improved coordination across delivery teams and strengthened executive oversight of platform delivery.

Value Delivered

The programme enabled several key outcomes:

  • A scalable Azure enterprise data platform supporting analytics and reporting

  • Integration of operational data across multiple systems

  • Improved capability for real-time reporting and advanced analytics

  • Stronger programme governance and delivery coordination

  • Alignment across architecture, engineering, and vendor delivery teams

Programme Environment

The programme operated within a complex enterprise environment including:

  • Large-scale operational and infrastructure data systems

  • Enterprise analytics and reporting platforms

  • Global engineering and architecture delivery teams
