Situation

ASDA was developing a modern enterprise data platform to support its expanding digital capabilities, including the ASDA Rewards platform and enterprise financial analytics.

As one of the UK’s largest retailers, ASDA operates an extraordinarily complex technology environment spanning customer engagement platforms, retail operations, financial systems and digital services. Data required for analytics and customer insight existed across numerous operational systems, making it difficult to generate consistent insight and support real-time customer programmes such as Rewards.

The organisation required a scalable cloud-based data platform capable of integrating data from multiple operational systems while providing a secure, governed environment for enterprise analytics and reporting.

Given the scale of the environment and the importance of customer analytics to the organisation’s digital strategy, the programme required strong governance, clear architecture direction, and coordinated delivery across multiple teams.

Action

As Senior Programme Lead, I oversaw the delivery of the enterprise data platform supporting ASDA Rewards and enterprise financial analytics capabilities.

Working with data engineers, architects, security teams, and senior stakeholders, I helped guide the development of a scalable Azure-based architecture capable of integrating data from more than 30 enterprise data sources.

Key areas of responsibility included:

  • Overseeing delivery of the enterprise Azure data platform architecture

  • Coordinating engineering and architecture teams responsible for platform delivery

  • Designing governance frameworks supporting enterprise data management and platform oversight

  • Establishing programme governance and executive reporting to ensure clear visibility of delivery progress and risks

  • Leading programme risk management workshops with senior stakeholders

  • Supporting the implementation of enterprise security and monitoring frameworks, including ISO27001-aligned SOC operations

The programme required close coordination across engineering, architecture, security and business teams to ensure the platform supported both operational analytics and customer engagement initiatives.

Outcome

The programme delivered a scalable enterprise data platform capable of supporting customer analytics, financial reporting and digital initiatives such as ASDA Rewards.

By integrating data from more than 30 operational systems, the platform provided the organisation with a stronger foundation for enterprise analytics while enabling improved visibility across key commercial and operational metrics.

The work also strengthened governance and security frameworks supporting the organisation’s evolving enterprise data capability.
